NORMAL LABOR – QUICK REVISION NOTES
Handwritten nursing notes on the Stages of Normal Labor. Here’s a clear, exam-oriented explanation π
π©Ί Stages of Normal Labor
Normal labor is divided into three stages based on cervical changes and events during childbirth.
1️⃣ First Stage of Labor
➡️ From onset of true labor pains until full cervical dilatation (10 cm)
It has two phases:
πΉ Latent Phase
Contractions: Mild and irregular
Cervical dilatation: 0–4 cm
Cervix becomes soft and effaced
Mother may feel discomfort but labor is slow
πΉ Active Phase
Contractions: Strong, regular, and painful
Cervical dilatation: 4–10 cm
Rapid progress of labor
Requires close monitoring of mother and fetus
2️⃣ Second Stage of Labor (Expulsion Stage)
➡️ From full cervical dilatation (10 cm) to birth of the baby
Baby moves through the birth canal
Mother actively pushes with contractions
Ends with delivery of the baby
3️⃣ Third Stage of Labor (Placental Stage)
➡️ From birth of the baby to delivery of placenta
Placenta is expelled
Uterine contractions are monitored
Check for maternal bleeding to prevent postpartum hemorrhage
