Levels of Prevention (Public Health Concept)
Prevention refers to actions taken to avoid disease, detect it early, and reduce complications.
1️⃣ Primary Prevention
Meaning:
Actions taken before the disease occurs to prevent it.
Goal:
Reduce the incidence (new cases) of disease.
Important Points:
Focus on health promotion and protection
Applied to healthy individuals
Prevents disease before it starts
Examples:
Vaccination / Immunization
Health education
Proper nutrition
Safe drinking water
Personal hygiene
Environmental sanitation
2️⃣ Secondary Prevention
Meaning:
Early detection and prompt treatment of disease.
Goal:
Reduce severity and duration of disease.
Important Points:
Focus on early diagnosis
Prevents progression of disease
Applied to people with early stage disease
Examples:
Screening tests
Blood pressure check
Cancer screening
Blood sugar testing
Regular health check-ups
3️⃣ Tertiary Prevention
Meaning:
Measures taken after disease has occurred to reduce complications and disability.
Goal:
Restore maximum function and quality of life.
Important Points:
Focus on rehabilitation
Prevent disability and complications
Improve patient’s quality of life

Rehabilitation programs
Physiotherapy
